Salerno. A severe blow to gangmastering was dealt today by law enforcement. The Carabinieri for the Protection of Labor and the Guardia di Finanza of Salerno notified 29 Italian prefectures of a measure that blocks and revokes 3.339 requests for hiring non-EU workers, presented by 142 companies mainly operating in the agricultural, construction and domestic sectors.
A criminal system unmasked. The investigations, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Salerno, have revealed a complex criminal system that exploited false job applications to facilitate the irregular entry of foreign workers into Italy. The companies involved, according to investigators, were allegedly used by several criminal organizations already targeted in the past for similar crimes.
Thousands of jobs at risk. With this operation, the aim is to nip in the bud a phenomenon that exploits workers vulnerable and creates unfair competition for businesses that operate in compliance with the rules. Prefectures will now be able to block ongoing practices, report irregularities to consular authorities and revoke residence permits already issued.
A strong signal against the mafia. Today's measure represents a hard blow to criminal organizations that profit from illegal work and illegal immigration. A clear signal that the State is determined to combat all forms of illegality and to protect the rights of workers, both Italian and foreign.

It is an important step forward, but I wonder if this measure will actually have a lasting effect on the phenomenon of gangmastering. Let's hope that companies will also be more controlled in the future to avoid abuses.
It is interesting to see how law enforcement is working to stop gangmastering, but there are many problems that remain. Let's hope that these actions can truly help workers and not just appear good for the media.
