The tragedy that struck Calenzano, in the province of Florence, worsened with the discovery of the body of the last person missing from yesterday's Eni fuel depot explosion. The official death toll now stands at five, while the conditions of two injured people hospitalized at Cisanello Hospital in Pisa continue to be "greatly concerning," according to Tuscany Region President Eugenio Giani.
So far, only one of the victims has been identified, Vincenzo Martinelli, 51. The other deceased are Carmelo Corso, 57, from Catania; Davide Baronti, 49, from Novara; Gerardo Pepe, 46, a German citizen living in Italy; and Fabio Cirielli, 46, from Matera. DNA tests will be necessary to definitively associate the names with the recovered remains.
Three people remain hospitalized following the explosion. A worker is being treated at Careggi Hospital in Florence, while two are at Cisanello in Pisa, one of whom was transferred yesterday evening from the Florence Polyclinic. Their conditions are serious due to the burns they suffered. Four other injured people initially hospitalized at Careggi have already been discharged.
Yesterday, another 19 injured people reported themselves to various hospitals in the area. Fourteen people were treated in Prato, three in Torregalli, three more in Empoli and one at Santa Maria Annunziata in Ponte a Niccheri. All have been discharged.
The President of the Region, Eugenio Giani, expressed the institutions' closeness to the injured and the families of the victims. “We continue to follow the situation closely and the Region, in all its branches, is committed to its healthcare system to ensure maximum support”, said Giani.
