Amina Mariam Bokhary belongs to an influential Hong Kong family. Her father, Syed Bagh Ali Shah, was a board member of the former Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Her uncle, Kemal, was a judge at the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal, and Kemal's wife was a High Court judge.
A maternal uncle, Ronald Arculli, had been the chairman of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing and was an unofficial member of the Executive Council of Hong Kong. His grandfather, Daoud Bokhary, served in the British Indian Army and founded Bokhary Securities.
Bokhary attended university in the UK and graduated with a first class degree in economics. She has had a series of jobs in the fashion industry, including Sotheby's, LVMH and Harvey Nichols in Hong Kong.
According to her lawyer, Bokhary was unable to find peace or satisfaction in her personal and professional life after returning to Hong Kong from Britain, and in 2007 she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, for which she was treated with strong psychotropic drugs and reportedly underwent intensive counselling.
Bokhary's first meeting with the police dates back to the early hours of June 24, 2001, when the manager of a bar in the Central District of Hong Kong called the police because the woman had caused a disturbance. When the police officers arrived on the scene, Bokhary hit an officer on the cheek. Since then there have been 4 other episodes and now she has also made herself known to the Italian justice system.
