A 50-year-old inmate committed suicide in the Arienzo prison, in the province of Caserta.
The news was given by the Campania Guarantor Samuele Ciambriello. “A socio-cultural reflection on prison and its regulatory system is urgently needed” says Ciambriello. “It is the third suicide in Campania since the beginning of the year – explains the guarantor – in Italy it has reached 45. We could ask ourselves why the 50-year-old prisoner decided to take his own life in a small prison like the one in Arienzo, in a single cell.
Here he arrived on July 9th from Poggioreale. We could stop at the responsibilities of individuals or collective responsibilities, but we need to go further. Prison, a place without sense and sometimes without relational elements to recover one's life, suffers the populist noises of people and political populism, in pursuit of consensus. And if we add that not even the very timid deflationary measures ordered by the Government are evident, then the omelette is done”.
The body, by order of the judicial authority, was transported to the morgue of the hospital of Caserta, where the autopsy will take place next Monday. In Italy, in addition to suicides, since the beginning of the year, there have been 79 deaths inside prisons; eight of these occurred in Campania and the causes of two of these are still being ascertained.
“Right in Arienzo, together with the Guarantor of the province of Caserta, Emanuela Belcuore, we were able to appreciate good treatment practices both inside the Institute and outside – underlines Ciambriello – through the possibility of work for the inmates.
We Guarantors not only denounce what is wrong, but we encourage and sometimes promote prevention actions, solidarity projects, social inclusion for a constitutionally oriented punishment, and for a prison where all those present, including the prison police, the management, the social-health workers and the volunteers, feel united by a pact of responsibility" concludes the Campania guarantor.
