Horror in Ischia – Animal violence strikes again, and once again the victim is a dog. Junior, this is the name of the mixed-breed protagonist of this tragedy, died in the flames of an apartment in Ischia, set on fire by his owner’s sister in a mad gesture. Junior’s dramatic story recalls that of Aron, the dog tied to a pole and set on fire by his own owner in Palermo, in January.
In this case, however, the culprit is not the owner, described as very fond of Junior, but his sister, who suffers from serious psychiatric disorders. In a moment of loss of lucidity, the woman doused the apartment with flammable liquid, which she then poured on the bodies of the two dogs present. Only one of the two animals survived the burns reported, while Junior did not make it.
Junior's lifeless body will be transferred to the pet cemetery in Qualiano, as a sign of respect for his tragic end. The case has sparked strong public indignation and harsh reactions from politicians and animal rights activists. Francesco Emilio Borrelli, a member of parliament for the Green Left Alliance, commented: “Once again, an animal is the innocent victim of absurd violence. This is a serious episode, with a woman in obvious distress who, as her family confirms, was not monitored as she should have been. We will discuss this with the ASL so that an internal investigation can be carried out into the management of the situation.”
The incident reignites the controversy over the ineffectiveness of Italian laws on animal protection. “Animal abuse, cruelty, torture and horrors are a reality that we cannot continue to ignore,” continues Borrelli. “The current rules are completely insufficient. Law 189 is just a consolation prize that never leads to serious consequences: no one really ends up in prison. We need a change of direction: now we are not satisfied with ineffective regulations, we want concrete and immediate actions.”
