Illegal landfills in Naples – Two landfills of special waste, including hazardous materials and asbestos fragments, were discovered and seized in Naples thanks to the collaboration between the Guardia di Finanza and Arpac technicians. The air section of the Guardia di Finanza of Naples identified the areas involved thanks to reports from citizens, while the investigations were coordinated by the environmental section of the Naples Prosecutor's Office, directed by prosecutor Nicola Gratteri.
The first landfill was found in the historic center, in the Spanish Quarters, where waste from building demolitions had been accumulated in tuff cavities dating back to the early 900s. Here, among the debris, investigators also found fragments of asbestos, highly dangerous for public health.
The second area, located along the panoramic descent of Marechiaro, was located using a Guardia di Finanza helicopter equipped with advanced detection equipment. This site, subject to severe landscape restrictions, is located in an area also frequented by children who, at the time of the checks, had been seen playing near the landfill, putting themselves at risk of exposure to toxic materials.
According to the investigations, the person responsible for these illegal dumpings would be the owner of some neighboring buildings, who would have accumulated construction waste in these areas, including the dangerous eternit. The prosecutor Nicola Gratteri commented in a note: “The operation, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Naples, has once again identified a disfigurement of the natural beauty of the capital, representing a virtuous example of environmental protection and the fight against illegal waste disposal”.
