With winter approaching, there's a growing debate about simple and effective ways to improve the efficiency of home radiators. One particularly popular trick involves applying a layer of aluminum foil to the wall behind the radiator. This practice, supported by organizations like ENEA (National Agency for Energy and Environmental Protection), promises to make heating operations quicker and more efficient, potentially offering savings on utility bills.

The Mechanism of Action of Tin Foil

Tin foil is made of aluminum, a material known for its ability to conduct heat. However, what may seem like an advantage turns out to be one because it prevents heat loss through radiation, one of the different ways in which heat propagates. By emitting electromagnetic waves, radiators heat the surrounding air. In this context, aluminum intervenes by reflecting approximately 93-94% of the infrared emitted, thus sending the heat back into the room instead of allowing it to be absorbed by the wall.

The Benefits of Heat Reflective Panels

While this solution does not guarantee a drastic improvement in efficiency, it can be a small but significant help. To further increase energy efficiency, installing heat-reflecting panels can offer better results. These panels, made up of two layers of aluminum separated by air, more effectively prevent heat from dispersing through the walls. However, for more significant energy savings, it is advisable to also consider other more advanced solutions, such as installing multiple-glazed windows or thermal insulation.
