The mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, has issued an urgent ordinance to prohibit the use of underground and semi-underground spaces in a restricted area of the Campi Flegrei, between Agnano-Pisciarelli, on the border between Naples and Pozzuoli.
The decision was taken following the detection of anomalous accumulations of carbon dioxide (CO2) linked to the phenomenon of bradyseism, reported by the Vesuvius Observatory of the INGV during monitoring activities.
The ordinance imposes a ban on using underground and semi-underground spaces for residential, work and recreational activities until the installation of CO2 detectors with acoustic and visual alarms. A similar ban applies to owners of production activities.
Among the self-protection measures, it is recommended to avoid depressed areas where volcanic gases can accumulate, such as cellars and garages, and to ventilate closed rooms. It is also advisable to equip basements with forced ventilation systems.
