The activity, carried out in execution of a decree of issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Torre Annunziata, led to 19 searches in Campania, Puglia and Emilia Romagna, involving as many individuals investigated for criminal association, receiving stolen goods and theft of cultural assets.

During the operations, 819 archaeological finds of inestimable value were seized, including 675 coins (mainly bronze, but also silver and gold) and 144 artefacts in bronze, lead and ceramics. The finds, dating back to a period between the XNUMXth century BC and the XNUMXth century AD, come mainly from Campania and Puglia and include objects from the Apulian, Magna Graecia and Roman periods.

The seized materials also include a sophisticated metal detector and various instruments used for surveying the ground, typical tools of the illegal activity of the so-called "grave robbers".

The operation is part of a broader investigation, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Torre Annunziata and conducted by the Archaeology Section of the Carabinieri TPC Operations Department of Rome, aimed at dismantling a well-structured criminal network dedicated to the illicit trafficking of archaeological goods. According to investigators, the organization follows a typical chain of command in the sector: the "tomb raiders", responsible for clandestine excavations, supply first- and second-level receivers, who feed an illicit market that also extends internationally.

The investigations have brought to light a complex criminal system, capable of exploiting the historical and cultural value of the finds for illicit purposes. The operation of the Carabinieri represents a significant blow against a phenomenon that threatens the Italian cultural heritage, depriving the community of testimonies of inestimable historical and artistic value.

Authorities continue to work to reconstruct the entire criminal chain and identify additional perpetrators, confirming the commitment of law enforcement in the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural goods, an activity that represents a priority for the protection of the national archaeological heritage.
