Palestinian filmmaker and activist Omar Suleiman has reported being the victim of a racially motivated attack while he was with a friend near the Montesanto station, in Napoli, last Saturday.
“It was a racist attack,” Suleiman said, “because a comrade from the Palestinian community of Campania and I were wearing our Kufie.
The episode occurred at 16:30 pm on Saturday 22 March on Cumana, when an individual began to provoke us repeatedly, at first in a trivial manner – playing the Israeli anthem several times – and then with attempts at physical contact, seeking a reaction from us.
We did not respond to the provocations, but the man waited for us at the Montesanto station and attacked us from behind there."
Suleiman stressed the seriousness of the incident, adding that the complaint has already been filed and that he expects legal consequences for the attacker. However, he wanted to make the story public, highlighting the indifference that surrounded the episode. "The people present - he added - limited themselves to commenting with phrases like 'Oh well, it's a question of religion', demonstrating a worrying selective empathy".
The Salerno association Memoria in Movimento also intervened in solidarity with Suleiman, condemning the episode, calling it an Islamophobic attack against the right to life, land and freedom of the Palestinian people.
The association reiterated that such incidents will not stop the international movement of solidarity with Palestine and announced two initiatives for the month of April: a benefit concert for Gaza on April 18 and an event on “Anti-Zionism and Decolonization” on April 29.
“The Palestinian Community of Campania – concludes the note from Memoria in Movimento – will be present with even greater conviction, to continue the path of militant solidarity with the Palestinian people”.

The reported episode is very worrying and makes us reflect on the current situation. It is disconcerting how people can remain indifferent in the face of such attacks. I hope there are more initiatives to raise awareness on these issues.
