Separate waste collection at Salerno, the reversal of the trend, compared to a decline in recent years, is clear and is consolidating.
From 58,53 in 2021, the percentage of separate waste collection in Salerno reached 69,15% in July, 74,71% in August and 71,31% in September, the month in which the days of collection of non-differentiable waste were 5 and not 4. A considerable leap forward that should allow the annual target of 65% to be reached already in 2022, considering that the performances of the first 5 months of the year had all been below 60%, with a drop to 54% in the month of May.
The data were presented this morning during the press conference at the Municipality of Salerno with Luca Fernando Ruini, national president of Conai (National Packaging Consortium), Vincenzo Napoli, mayor of Salerno, and Vincenzo Bennet, sole director of Salerno Pulita, the subsidiary company that is responsible for the street sweeping and waste collection service.
“As I have already mentioned, Salerno was the city with which Conai began working on separate waste collection, many years ago, to build an effective and efficient model for the South. Today we are very happy to see the results of the campaign launched only a few months ago, and which brought a concrete and rapid response: the 70% mark has been largely exceeded.
With political will and citizen commitment, great results can be achieved even in a short time", declared Conai President Luca Ruini. Vincenzo Bennet, who thanked Conai for its commitment, also focused on the quantitative aspects: "The most significant figure of all, which also has economic implications for lower disposal costs, is that of the non-differentiable fraction, the quantities of which have decreased by a thousand tons compared to May 2022. Parallel to the decrease in non-differentiable, the quantities of differentiated materials to be sent for recycling have increased". In fact, the analysis of the data shows that the quantity of paper has almost doubled compared to May 2022, as well as multi-material (plastic, steel, aluminum and beverage cartons).
Glass records a more modest but still interesting increase. Organic waste and small WEEE also show a plus, but textiles are the ones that have recorded the greatest increase, going from 3 tons in May 2022 to 32 in September. The only data that goes against the trend and is fluctuating is that of cardboard, which has recorded a decline due both to competition from private companies but also to the use by users as containers for disposing of paper.”
We present these data - Mayor Vincenzo Napoli highlighted - with great pride. Salerno has responded greatly to the new organization of the service both in terms of quantity and quality. I would like to thank Conai, for the valuable support it has provided us, and the vast majority of fellow citizens, families, businesses that scrupulously carry out the delivery and all the service workers who do their utmost to ensure the best outcome. A round of applause also to the Municipal Police, careful to sanction any residual uncivil behavior".
But there's more: last week Conai analyzed seven samples taken from as many trucks that had transported the non-differentiable fraction collected in Salerno to the Battipaglia TMB. From the comparison with as many product analyses carried out in September 2021, again on behalf of Conai and Eda Salerno, it emerged that the quality of the non-differentiable has also improved.
