The artistic work depicting Leda and the Swan and the treasures of Boscoreale at the centre of political criticism. Diplomat: “This is an election campaign, since they are not informed about what has been achieved."
“The note that appeared in the local press is specious and useless. Unfortunately, some people mistakenly believe themselves to be the custodians of knowledge and truth; I am sorry to wake them from their slumber, it is not so. I am not aware that in Naples and in other places where there are even impressive murals there have been associations that have contested the works”.
This is the incipit of the response of the mayor of Boscoreale Antonio Diplomatico to an article which appeared in the local press, in which he attacks the administration for the mural created on the external wall of the council chamber by the Sardinian artist Kiki Skipi, depicting the myth of "Leda and the Swan" and the treasures found last century during the Boscoreale excavations and exhibited at the Louvre in Paris.
“I only read personal opinions without the effort of any verification – continues the mayor – There is a determination that clearly and synthetically reports the procedure followed. It is the usual political controversy preparatory to the election campaign: it is hypothesized the defacement of a historical asset that is not such, being an extension of the 80s of the Town Hall, that one is historical and subject to constraints. The controversy is also supported by the statements of the Pd councilor who forgets that her party has more representatives in the council and the highest office of the city council”.
Furthermore, on the issue of citizen involvement, the tricolour band is clear: "I believe that never before has so much work been done to involve citizens. Seven meetings with both our young people and many other people, in order to raise awareness and receive indications for the creation of the mural. It is shameful that the amount recognized to an association, famous for its curriculum, which has carried out a much more complex process than just the creation of the work, is disputed. For these professional protesters – Diplomatico underlines – evidently there are double standards: their ideas are worth a lot, those of all the others count much less”.
Finally, the mayor concluded: “I advise Sergio D'Alessio not to get indignant on command, given that the work in question was created in compliance with the law, and not to use Libera as a tool for political battle. This is not why Don Luigi Ciotti animates the association that fights the mafia. I advise everyone to bathe in humility and the necessary silence as a form of respect for those who worked so hard so that Piazza Pace also had a window on art”.
