Campi Flegrei: Soil slows down progress: lifting halved in the last month

The Vesuvius Observatory's bulletin confirms the trend: monthly temperatures have dropped from 25 to 15 millimeters. Twenty-four minor tremors have been recorded in the last week.

Naples – A breath of fresh air, albeit cautious, comes from technical data on the bradyseism affecting the Phlegraean Fields. According to the latest weekly monitoring bulletin released by the Vesuvius Observatory (INGV), the rate of ground uplift in the Phlegraean Fields has undergone a marked deceleration. Since mid-December 2025, the average rate has stabilized at 15 mm per month, confirming a slowing trend compared to the peaks recorded last fall. Data Trends: 2025 was a year of strong fluctuations for the caldera. After the intense seismic swarm in February, the rate of uplift doubled, reaching 30 mm per month, before stabilizing in the spring. A new acceleration occurred starting on October 10, with the ground pushing upward again at a rate of 25 mm per month. The current reading of 15 mm therefore marks a return to a less turbulent phase, although the overall impact remains significant: the GNSS station in Rione Terra, the historic heart of Pozzuoli, estimates that the ground has risen a full 23 centimeters in the last year.
