Cinema, shows, seminars, meetings and readings: the events of Maggio dei Monumenti 2024 – Le acque di Napoli continue, the event promoted and financed by the Municipality of Naples that aims to enhance the cultural heritage of the city through a transversal offer, which animates the territory and involves audiences of all ages.

The weekend of programming begins on Friday 17th with the extraordinary opening of the Library Hall of the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station, with frescoes by the German painter Hans von Marées (visiting times 10.00 and 11.00).

From 17.30:19.30 pm to XNUMX:XNUMX pm the Pausilypon Archaeological Park will host Gennaro Carillo's seminar entitled "Temperance. A story of water, wine, democracy": What does Polyphemus drunk on Marone's wine have to do with the concept of mixing (krasis), so important for ancient medicine and philosophy? Does water have an ethical-political value? And does pure wine have anything to do with democracy? The meeting is part of the series of seminars on ancient philosophy "In the beginning was water", which will continue for the next Fridays at the same time.

At 19.00:XNUMX pm, at the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, the first show of the series curated by In Scena srl – Teatro Sancarluccio, with artistic direction by Procultur, will be held. “Nove piccoli sorsi di mare” is an intense and evocative journey that tells of women, drawing on stories that have in common wounds and scars that sometimes will never heal and to which Amada (stage name of the Neapolitan singer-songwriter Annalisa Madonna) tries to give a therapeutic connotation through music.

At 21.00:2000 pm the Multicinema Modernissimo hosts the screening of “Le harmonie di Werckmeister” (1955), with a speech by Antonio Biasiucci, which inaugurates the complete retrospective dedicated to the Hungarian director Béla Tarr (Pécs, Hungary, 2011), awarded, among other things, with the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 16. In total there are 2024, between screenings and events, the appointments of the Maggio dei Monumenti XNUMX that will see Béla Tarr as protagonist, who made water a fundamental element of his work, marked by a suffering humanity and suspended on its own existential condition as if waiting for a miraculous or catastrophic event. The films of the entire festival are in the original language with Italian subtitles. As part of the Cohousing Cinema Napoli project, the director will also hold a completely free workshop, aimed at young filmmakers, who will thus have the opportunity to interact and learn from one of the great masters of world cinema.

Saturday May 18th extraordinary opening for the Teatro di Palazzo Donn'Anna, home of the De Felice Foundation (visiting shift at 11.00), separated from the sea by three imposing arches; much of the space is carved directly into the tuff bank, and develops in the form of a gallery over the sea, with an extraordinary view of the Gulf of Naples and Vesuvius. The visit will be followed, at 12.00, by the meeting/conference with Emanuele Greco, Daniela Giampaola and Alessandro Iannace entitled "Naples before Naples. Archaeology and geology of the origins: at the sources of Monte Echia": in the tuff, which still emerges forcefully between the buildings that have almost completely covered the hill, a fragment of the long series of volcanic eruptions that gave rise to the hills on which the first Greek settlement arose can be read. Here, the alternations of stratified yellow and black rock tell of the tremendous pyroclastic flows that accompanied the birth of a small volcano just off the current coastline. The action of the sea in the following millennia almost completely destroyed the volcanic cone, leaving only the promontory and the islet of Megaride, with its ferruginous waters, which presented themselves as an ideal landing place for the Cumaean colonists who founded the city here, where the myth would place the remains of the siren.
At 12.00 and 14.00 at the Church of San Giovanni Maggiore it will be the turn of “Acqua ~ Água ~ Eau ~ اب”, a performance by f.pl. Femminile plurale, at the end of the visit itinerary number 1 – The water that purifies: The places of San Giovanni. The scenic composition, which involves women victims of abuse, started from personal stories, which immediately became a collective manifesto, the expression of a community that wants other rules. Reading Armilla, one of Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities, helped the group to explore real and imaginary worlds, physical and metaphysical. Places that make all boundaries blurred and many stories possible.

At 18.00:XNUMX pm the Gaiola underwater park will host “Mare inVerso”, a reading with musical accompaniment by the theatre company La chiave di Artemisia: a journey of acting and experimentation between reading, music and art that traces a thread between the authors who in various ways have spoken and have been inspired by the sea, with a special thought for those who have drawn inspiration from the sea of Naples, such as Matilde Serao, Annamaria Ortese, Raffaele la Capria.

At 19.00:XNUMX pm the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore will host “Ago, filo 'e parole”, a concert by Kalìka curated by In Scena srl – Teatro Sancarluccio: the three wonderful voices that sing and harmonize, sometimes a cappella, will perform the female texts that tell stories of women, with a never-ending fascination for witches (Dianara), of young people waiting for love interrupted by journeys, sudden departures similar to odysseys ('O vico d' 'e rrose), or nocturnal tales revealed by the light of the moon that becomes the compass before dawn illuminates everything.

Saturday will end at 21.00:XNUMX p.m. at the Church of Santa Lucia a Mare, with a special tribute that the actress and singer Antonella Morea will dedicate to the sea, a resource of immeasurable beauty and worthy of respect and homage, which inspired the selection of songs in which it is the undisputed protagonist. In the concert, poems by Eduardo, Gibran, Hikmet, Viviani, Lorca, Ketti Martino, Anna Maria Ortese and songs by Pino Daniele, Enzo Gragnaniello, Lucio Dalla, Ruggeri and many others, such as: “Where there is the sea”, “Guardann' 'o mare”, “'O mare e Margellina” (Viviani), “Qualcosa arrivato”, “Chi tene 'o mare”, “Il mare d'inverno”, “Ci vuole il mare”, “Alfonsina y el mar”, “'E femmene 'e mare”.

Sunday May 19th at 11.00 the Asylum hosts the screening of Béla Tarr's film “Sátántangó” (1994), with an introduction by Marcello Sannino.

At the same time, at the Rotonda Diaz, “Pulcinella a Lido Mappatella”, a puppet show by Casa Guarattelle. Bruno Leone and Federica Martina, with music by Zena Rotundi, will take the young audience on a dive into puppet theatre, a magical world inhabited by puppets, puppets and marionettes.
The extraordinary opening scheduled for the day is that of the Naval Base of the Navy (visiting hours at 17.00 pm and 18.00 pm) at the Molo San Vincenzo, a historic garrison whose core dates back to the mid-1500s, known today even by the younger generations for being the main set of the series “Mare Fuori”.

At 18.00:XNUMX pm in the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore concert by Patrizia Spinosi in “Il mare di fronte”, curated by In Scena srl – Teatro Sancarluccio: with this concert, the artist, accompanied by musicians Michele Bonè, Salvatore Esposito and Gennaro Esposito, enters the folds of a repertoire of poignant passion. When Naples appears to us “on the other side of the sea”, when we feel it far away, that is the moment to explain the voice and open the heart to poets and composers without more reservations, intimately experiencing the “simplicity” and the strength of all the love they have told.

At 19.00:5 pm, the TAN – Teatro Area Nord, and the Butterfly Garden that surrounds it, will be the setting for the reading on the theme of water as a source of inspiration, “Immersioni”, with Luca Saccoia, the third event of the Area Nord Garden Festival curated by the Interno XNUMX cultural association.

On Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 May there will be no shortage of thematic itineraries of the widespread exhibition “Per corsi d'acqua”, composed of five sections, for as many transversal readings of Naples: each visitor will receive a kit with the “instructions for use”, to enter even more into a relationship with the places and discover – also through the qr-codes scattered along the routes – small wonders. A browsable digital catalogue with the route maps and integrated audio, will also allow those who do not participate in the guided tours, to follow the routes and discover the city.

These are the itineraries, bookable through the link https://www.eventbrite.it/o/comune-di-napoli-65123383823: The water that purifies: the places of San Giovanni; The transported, infiltrated… disappeared water; The removed water; The waters of myth between history and legend; The water of Parthenope. “Per corsi d'acqua” was born to offer everyone the opportunity to enter the deep, complex and articulated world of waters in Naples, exploring the city through a new perspective.
