Naples is preparing to welcome back the Giro d'Italia, in what the metropolitan mayor Gaetano Manfredi defines as “a long love story”. On May 15, the city will once again be the protagonist of the Giro d'Italia, not only as a breathtaking backdrop but as a symbol of a solid relationship with RCS and with international sport.
“The Giro is good for Naples – said Manfredi – because the images of our beauties transmitted throughout the world have an extraordinary tourist impact, visible in the numbers and in the renewed enthusiasm". But this year the challenge is not only aesthetic or organizational. The metropolitan deputy mayor Giuseppe Cirillo wanted to underline another interpretation, decidedly more social and profound: "We have chosen to bring the race also to places that are experiencing complex situations, such as the Parco Verde in Caivano or the Fiat-Stellantis plant in Pomigliano, to say that there is hope everywhere. The Giro is also this: a metaphor for redemption, an opportunity for rebirth".
The event is part of a broader plan that sees Naples at the center of European sport. This was recalled by Sergio Colella, metropolitan councilor with responsibility for Sport, who highlighted the economic and infrastructural commitment that accompanies the race: 3,1 million euros already invested in the redevelopment of the streets and numerous interventions on sports facilities and cultural venues, with an eye on Naples as European capital of Sport 2026.
And precisely in view of that appointment, the city is working on an even more ambitious dream: to start the Tour of Italy from Naples. “We are moving on many hypotheses – said Manfredi – and among these there is also that of hosting the inaugural stage. 2026 will be a year full of events for us, but this 2025 already promises a lot, as demonstrated by the preview of the inaugural match of the European Volleyball Championships in Piazza Plebiscito”.
