Like a new Paltrinieri the escapee Lucius Esposito he attempts to escape by swimming from Procida to Monte di Procida: arrested after having touched land and after having also tried to escape on foot.
The protagonist of the incredible swimming escape is Lucio Esposito, who will turn 39 this September. He is said to have celebrated it in his apartment in Vico Equense where he was under house arrest but had disappeared since June 2. An escapee, he fled the walls of that domestic penitentiary.
The Carabinieri of Procida never stopped looking for him and yesterday late in the afternoon they tracked him down. He was not on the street, at the supermarket or at the bar like many other people tracked down every day after a brief escape.
He was on the boat, between Monte di Procida and Procida. He was rocking the waves when he was surrounded by a patrol boat of the Ischia carabinieri and two of the port authorities of Procida and Ischia. No escape because his vessel would not have been able to compete with the powerful engines of the patrol boats.
So he makes a different choice. He dives into the sea, abandons the boat and starts swimming.
The soldiers, incredulous, order him to stop but he continues with his strokes, one after the other, as if he were the world champion. Gregorio Paltrinieri during a Capri-Naples alone.
A break every now and then holding on to the life preserver of the Coast Guard and the threat of letting themselves sink. And then off with the freestyle. Carabinieri and the Coast Guard could do nothing but slowly escort the fugitive who showed no signs of surrendering.
He traveled several kilometers like this, almost the entire Procida Canal, up to the port of Monte di Procida. Although he was exhausted by the grueling ordeal, he showed no signs of giving up, but before he attempted a new escape on foot, he was stopped.
Thanks also to the collaboration of the military of the Pozzuoli company, Esposito ended up in handcuffs for evasion and resisting a public official. He is now in prison, dry but awaiting judgment.
