The Senate confirms its confidence in the government by approving the resolution on the communications of the Prime Minister presented by Pier Ferdinando Casini with 95 votes in favor and 38 against.
Senators from M5S, Lega and Fi do not vote: the pentastellati declare themselves "present not voting". The senators present in the Chamber were 192, 133 voted and the majority 67. This was stated in the Senate Chamber by President Maria Elisabetta Casellati reporting the outcome of the vote on confidence in Prime Minister Draghi.
The Prime Minister left Palazzo Chigi but without going to the Quirinale to resign.
Draghi will announce his intention to go to the Quirinale to resign on Thursday morning in the Chamber, at the beginning of the general debate. The session is called for 9:00.
Lega, M5s and Forza Italia do not vote confidence in Draghi in the Senate. “If they do not participate in the vote, will there be no quorum? And there is no quorum”. This is what the president of the Senate, Elisabetta Casellati, said, addressing the secretary general of Palazzo Madama – with the microphone open and audible – immediately after the announcement by M5s that it will not participate in the vote on confidence in the government. The same decision was announced by Forza Italia and Lega.
The dissolution of Parliament and the vote are approaching. It is the epilogue of a dramatic day lived between Palazzo Madama, Palazzo Chigi and the Quirinale and of the crisis opened by the M5s. "On this day of madness, Parliament decides to go against Italy. We have put all our efforts possible to avoid this and support the Draghi government. Italians will demonstrate at the ballot box that they are wiser than their representatives". This is what the secretary of the Democratic Party Enrico Letta wrote on Twitter.
“We have become the target of a political attack, we have been kicked out, there were no conditions for us to continue with loyal collaboration”. This was stated by the president of the M5s Giuseppe Conte.
Mattarella also took to the field to persuade the center-right not to bring down the government, speaking with the leaders of the majority. It was a question of accepting the new pact proposed by the Prime Minister: 'Are you ready? You don't have to give the answer to me, but to the Italians', he had said in the morning's communications. 'The support I have seen in the country has led me to propose a coalition pact again and submit it to your vote, you decide. No requests for full powers', Draghi said in his reply before asking for confidence, which Forza Italia and the League have announced they will not vote on, leaving the Chamber. As soon as the call for confidence began, Prime Minister Mario Draghi left the Chamber of Palazzo Madama.
