It had been closed for seven years, now – after careful restoration work that involved most of the chapels and the roof – it will reopen and become a point of reference for the students of the “Federico II” University of Napoli. It is the Royal Pontifical Basilica of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli (inside Palazzo San Giacomo), a true treasure chest of art little known by Neapolitans and which is owned by the Royal Archconfraternity of the Mount of the Most Holy Sacrament of Spanish Nobles.
The use of the chapel will be possible thanks to a protocol that was signed with the rector of the “Federico II”, Matteo Lorito. “The Federico II thus strengthens its mission to support – explained the rector Lorito – to support and promote the use of the historical heritage of the city”. “We will contribute to the reopening – he added – but above all we will fill it with content: young people will go and there will be our doctoral students who will study the wonderful works. And it will become a venue for conferences, congresses and guided tours also open to tourists”.
The delegate governor of the archconfraternity Giuseppe de Vargas Machuca who signed the protocol with the rector said he was happy with the agreement reached, stigmatizing "that the main purpose is to return to the city a monument that few know about and make it accessible from a cultural point of view and also with social projects".
