To ensure his legal defense, the man requested a payment of 5.000 euros, having gold jewelry delivered as an advance. The arrival of the scammer was preceded by a phone call from a fake Carabinieri marshal, who had prepared the victim for the scam. The Carabinieri, already on duty in the area, noticed the man wandering around suspiciously and, after stopping him as he left the house, found him in possession of the jewelry that had just been stolen. The man was arrested in flagrante delicto and placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities.
The case in San Marco in Lamis
A similar episode occurred in San Marco in Lamis, where a 47-year-old attempted to defraud a 94-year-old man. In this case, the pensioner's 58-year-old caregiver received a phone call from a self-styled carabiniere demanding the payment of 4.000 euros and the delivery of valuables to compensate for damages caused by an alleged road accident attributed to the 94-year-old's son, who was being held in the barracks.
The carer, frightened by the news, took action to collect the requested sum, but also told the incident to some relatives of the 94-year-old. The relatives, suspicious, immediately contacted 112, alerting the police. Thanks to the information provided, the military stopped the man before he could carry out his plan.
Both cases highlight the importance of promptly reporting suspicious situations. The two operations prevented the elderly from being defrauded of their assets, confirming the constant commitment of the Carabinieri to combat fraud against the most vulnerable segments of the population.
