After years spent in Germany, Vittorio (a fictitious name to protect his privacy) had returned to Napoli, in his parents' house.
But fate had a tough test in store for him: a thoracic aortic aneurysm that put his life in danger. Thanks to the timely intervention of the medical team at Ospedale del Mare, today the elderly man has a second chance.
At 79, Vittorio lived alone, with few loved ones at his side. When he was diagnosed with a serious dilation of the aorta, he thought about returning to Germany for surgery, but fear and loneliness pushed him to give up, deciding to return to his city. A choice that proved to be crucial.
On the night of December 19, a sudden, excruciating pain in his chest woke him up. Aware of the seriousness of the situation, he called 118. He was rushed to the Ospedale del Mare, where he underwent a CT scan and was immediately operated on.
The surgery was successful, but a few days later a second surgery was necessary for a new aortic rupture. The situation was complex, but the surgical team faced the challenge with professionalism and competence.
After weeks in intensive therapy and a long recovery, Vittorio was discharged on January 12. His case has become a symbol of the excellence of Campania healthcare. "We are happy to have given a second chance to this fellow citizen of ours, demonstrating that our healthcare has nothing to envy of other realities," said the general director of ASL Napoli 1, Ciro Verdoliva, expressing gratitude to all the staff involved.
Today Vittorio can finally look at the sea of his Naples with a new gaze: that of someone who has won the battle for life.
