Yesterday a Penitentiary Police inspector responsible for general surveillance at the Institute of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, hit in the face by an Italian prisoner with a headbutt which caused a suspected fracture of the nasal septum and forced to seek medical treatment at the hospital in Aversa.
The superintendent, Dr. Lucia Castellano, arrived at the institute and promised to send prison staff given the serious staff shortages.
According to the regional secretary of CON.SI.PE Campania Luigi Castaldo, the organization of work in the Campania penitentiaries must be revisited, putting the safety and well-being of the Penitentiary Police personnel at the forefront, but for this to happen, it is important to understand the synergy between the Parties and there is greater collaboration, understanding that the treatment and re-education of the inmate can only and exclusively take place when the State demonstrates its efficiency by adopting alternative measures to detention to empty the Campania penitentiaries, acting on psychiatric and non-EU prisoners and above all when the organic plants are restored based on the workloads, currently blocked at 2017 numbers with a shortage in Campania of about 1000 penitentiary police officers.
CON.SI.PE wishes a speedy recovery to the non-commissioned officer hit in the face and expresses its utmost solidarity and closeness to all those Penitentiary Police personnel who have been victims of assaults.
According to CON.SI.PE vice-president Luciano Martiniello, it is time to say enough to these attacks, a decisive and exemplary intervention is urgently needed to act as a deterrent against this phenomenon.
The Penitentiary Police staff cannot be executioners and martyrs at the same time, this shows that the current penitentiary system is a failure.
We hope for remedial action by the Penitentiary Administration as soon as possible, otherwise we will continue to take to the streets.
