Lorenzo, a 6-year-old boy suffering from SMA, a rare neuromuscular disease, cannot attend school in Pozzuoli, in the province of Naples. In solidarity with him, the parents of the 180 elementary school students decided to have their children absent.
The little one requires special assistance from a specialized nurse who can intervene immediately if necessary, due to the nature of his illness which involves an overproduction of saliva.
The mother reported the problem to the ASL and the school previously, but no intervention seems to have been carried out.
The school principal assures that there is a concrete will to find a solution and that progress is already being made in this direction. To support the protest of Lorenzo's family, all the other parents have joined the strike of lessons.
The situation highlights the need for urgent intervention and increased awareness of the needs of children with disabilities, so that they can access education in an adequate and inclusive manner.
