A drone and over half a kilo of drugs, mainly hashish and about ten grams of cocaine, were seized late yesterday evening inside the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison by the penitentiary police.
An officer noticed a drone lying on the ground in the Tevere ward's walking area; running toward it, he discovered that it was connected to a package containing drugs, presumably intended for an inmate.
Almost simultaneously, an inmate started a small fire in his cell, intending to go down to the walking area and retrieve the drug. Although he denied that the drugs were intended for him, the inmate is currently under investigation.
The drone and the drugs were confiscated; it seems that the small aircraft, after being controlled remotely from outside, landed on the ground and was no longer able to fly due to the loss of signal.
“It is a real daily war in prisons to prevent the entry of drugs and cell phones,” comments the regional secretary of the penitentiary police union Uspp, Ciro Auricchio.
“Organized crime, with increasingly sophisticated technological means and tactics, seeks to undermine internal security, and this is why it is essential to equip the prison police with technologically advanced means to combat this scourge.
Despite the serious staff shortage, in Santa Maria Capua Vetere we are still able to maintain order and security inside the prison.”
