The Aigo Confesercenti Association has raised the issue of installing smoke detectors in all non-hotel accommodations. According to the organization, the requirement for such devices should be extended beyond short-term rentals, including bed and breakfasts and vacation rentals. The appeal was launched following a tragic fire in a vacation rental in Piazza Municipio, which resulted in the death of a young tourist.

Vincenzo Schiavo, president of Confesercenti Campania, expressed deep sorrow for the tragedy. Schiavo emphasized the importance of safety in accommodation and assured the organization's support to entrepreneurs in complying with current regulations. At the heart of the debate is the need to ensure adequate safety measures to avoid tragic accidents like the one that occurred.

Smoke detectors for short term rentals

Legislative Decree 145/2023 established that short-term rental operators must install fire extinguishers and gas and carbon monoxide detectors. The legislation establishes specific requirements for the safety of the facilities, including mandatory detectors, with few exemptions. However, the law remains ambiguous regarding bed and breakfasts and vacation rentals, requiring further legal clarification regarding the placement and quantity of required sensors.

Strict rules for everyone

Salvatore Spavone, provincial coordinator of the Naples Fire Brigade, has called for the mandatory installation of smoke detectors to be extended to all homes. He proposes providing state aid to cover the costs of retrofitting. He also cited other European countries, where such measures are already mandatory, as examples to follow for improving home safety.

The introduction of strict safety regulations in residential and hospitality facilities has become an increasingly important issue, prompting coordinated legislative action. Recent tragedies have highlighted the urgent need for regulatory updates to protect the lives of residents and tourists.

It is important to talk about safety in accommodation facilities but there are many aspects that must be carefully considered. It is not enough to just install smoke detectors, but also to provide adequate training to operators.
