The last night of the year in the Salerno area ended with eight people injured by New Year's Eve fireworks, two of them seriously.
The most dramatic case concerns a 22-year-old Moroccan who had his right hand amputated after a firecracker exploded. The young man was initially treated at the Sarno hospital and then transferred to Umberto I in Nocera Inferiore.
Also in the same hospital, a man, a non-EU citizen of about 40 years old, victim of a partial amputation of the left hand and wrist, was admitted. For the latter, a transfer to a hospital in the regional capital for further treatment is not excluded.
The other six people reported wounds less serious, being treated and discharged in a short time from the hospitals of Salerno and the province. Among these, two were treated at the Ruggi d'Aragona in Salerno: a 49-year-old man with a 30-day prognosis for an eye injury and a 35-year-old woman with a slight injury (5-day prognosis).
Compared to the previous year, when there were seven minor injuries, the number has increased slightly. “A minimal increase, considering the severity of the prognoses this year,” said the police commissioner of the province of Salerno, Giancarlo Conticchio, in a meeting with the press. However, he reiterated: “This number must be brought down. Having fun is fine, but ending up in the hospital is not acceptable.”

It is very sad to hear of such serious accidents due to New Year's Eve fireworks. I hope that in the future we can find a safer way to celebrate, also because the injuries are always painful and should not happen.
