Salerno – Almost six years after the tragic death of Alessandro Farina, the thirteen-year-old who died on December 27, 2017 due to a serious form of type 1 diabetes that was not diagnosed in time, the Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office has ordered the indictment of five other doctors from the “Ruggi” hospital.
The decision comes a few days after the ruling of the Court of Appeal of Salerno, which confirmed the convictions of two doctors already held responsible for the young patient's death.
The five doctors, all employed at the Salerno hospital, are now accused of manslaughter and negligent personal injury in the healthcare sector. Three of them were initially acquitted, with their cases archived, while the other two had never been formally reached by a notice of investigation.
However, the prosecutor had already asked, in the first phase of the trial, for a review of those positions, believing that there were elements to be explored further. The reopening of the investigations led to the decision to bring them to trial.
Alessandro Farina, suffering from an acute form of diabetes, did not receive the timely treatment he needed, a mistake that proved fatal. His death has shocked the local community and reignited the debate on the quality of health care, especially when it comes to minor patients.
“It is a question of justice, of building civilization. A new chapter is opening,” said Francesco Morra, mayor of Pellezzano and Alessandro’s uncle. “This trial confirms, unequivocally, the mistakes made on that tragic day, mistakes that proved fatal.
Together with the lawyer Conte, whom I thank for his support, we will carefully follow this new phase to bring out more and more the truth about a tragedy that could and should have been avoided”.
Morra also announced his intention to carry forward a project to create an association dedicated to the issue of diabetes in minors, with the aim of raising awareness and preventing similar tragedies in the future. “It is the thing that is closest to our hearts,” the mayor concluded.
The case of Alessandro Farina continues to shake public opinion, raising questions about the management of health emergencies and the need to ensure timely and effective care, especially when young lives are involved. The trial against the five doctors represents a new chapter in a story that has already deeply affected the community of Salerno.

It is important that justice is done, but I wonder if this situation could have been avoided. There are too many responsibilities in healthcare and families suffer. Let's hope that the trial brings clarity and truth.
