“A tragedy struck a 59-year-old woman who died in Scafati from a cardiac arrest from which she never recovered.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and believe that the episode should be examined correctly so that it is free from any kind of exploitation."
Thus begins a long joint note released by regional councilors Franco Picarone of the Democratic Party, and Luca Cascone, of the “De Luca Presidente” group, on the tragedy that struck yesterday a 59-year-old woman who died of a heart attack a short distance from the hospital and without being able to access the closed emergency room.
“In the first statements, however, someone – it is emphasized – on the wave of emotion of the episode, attacked the regional health system head-on on the basis of inaccuracies and distortions of reality, at a time that should advise silence, respect for the relatives of the deceased and rigorous verification of the facts. Let's go in order.
The Mauro Scarlato hospital had been closed during the regional management of Caldoro. Currently, both in the hospital plan shared with the Ministry of Health, and in the company act, and, further, in the recently proposed company act, a basic emergency room and not a first aid point is envisaged for the Mauro Scarlato.
And specifically, the Region has requested, for the same facility, two complex structures, two simple departmental structures, plus 8 simple structures with 154 beds, with services such as orthopedics and traumatology, general surgery, general medicine, long-term care, pneumology, rheumatology, anesthesia and resuscitation and intensive care, etc.
So the Region has given great dignity to the Scafati garrison in the planning documents”. “We recall – the two councilors continue – that Scafati was the main hub in the province of Salerno for the management of Covid, with excellent performances. Immediately after this phase the garrison caught fire.
This unforeseen event has made a significant part of it unusable. Therefore, the Region immediately financed, with art. 20, works for seismic adaptation for 4.5 million, for which the clearance from the Ministry of Health arrived only a few days ago.
In addition, another 11 million have been requested for the completion and internal works. This is proof of how they intend to work for the hospital. Anything but closure!” “Currently – the two councilors inform – the works for the first aid point have just finished. The results of the static tests are awaited and the refitting of the analysis laboratory can also proceed.
Only the lack of staff prevented, after the completion of the work, from opening the first aid point. But the ASL has never been idle. It held a competition for 36 emergency doctors on October 13th. 17 candidates responded.
In the next few days they will be called to request their contractualization and they can be distributed to the hospitals. This could allow the opening of the service in Scafati”.
“It is clear that the situation of emergency rooms in general, however – the note continues – also depends on the response to the competitions for emergency doctors and health workers (and not only) that the ASL is conducting.
We all know that there is a huge problem of shortage of doctors due to a series of measures that the government absolutely must adopt (elimination of the restricted number of places in Medicine, increase in doctors' salaries, possibility of incentives, elimination of spending caps on personnel blocked by financial laws, increase in resources for Campania of the health fund unfairly distributed: all serious battles that our President De Luca is carrying forward against the Government and the competent Ministry!). The two regional councilors also return to the reconstruction of the facts.
“The lady had a cardiac arrest in the car near the Bar Caffè Trento near the hospital in Scafati where she was rescued (always in the car) by the 118 doctor who arrived on board the ambulance that was alerted at 11.13.23, left at 11.15 and arrived on site at 11.25 (actual waiting time 11 minutes and 37 seconds, the Lea protocol provides for a maximum waiting time of 20 minutes). All the maneuvers foreseen and possible for the specific cases were carried out.
These are the real facts that in such a difficult moment must be represented, beyond any instrumentalization. Campania and De Luca - the note concludes - are doing everything in their power to give Scafati a health system worthy of the territory and the citizens of Scafati".
