The story dates back to July 21, when a 57-year-old man of Tunisian origins was left feverish and severely dehydrated at the door of the emergency room of the Tarquinia hospital. The man, later urgently transferred to the Belcolle hospital in Viterbo, died two days later due to his very serious conditions.
It was thanks to the timely alarm raised by the hospital health workers that the carabinieri were able to identify both the car in which the man had been left and its driver.
Subsequently, the investigations conducted by the Carabinieri of the Montalto Di Castro station and those of the Labor Inspectorate, coordinated by the Civitavecchia Public Prosecutor's Office, led to the discovery that the deceased 57-year-old, at the time of his illness, was working on the farm of the two accused, and that his employers, despite having seen him collapse to the ground, had not immediately helped him.
Further investigations revealed that six other Tunisian workers employed illegally in the same company were working, three of whom were without a work permit.
The father and son are under house arrest in Palma Campania
Today, by order of the Civitavecchia Public Prosecutor's Office, the two entrepreneurs accused of manslaughter and gangmastering were placed under house arrest in their home in Palma Campania, strengthened by electronic device control.
The episode is only the latest in a series of cases of gangmastering that occur every year in Italy. The phenomenon, which involves mostly foreign workers, consists in exercising the power to provide work, to control and to regulate work activity, in such a way as to exert a decisive influence on the working and living conditions of workers, in violation of the laws in force on work and immigration.
Gangmastering is a criminal offence and carries severe penalties, ranging from a minimum of three years to a maximum of eight years in prison.
