Emanuele Giovannini, 38 years old from Tortoreto, in the province of Teramo, died on Sunday 18 February at the hospital Fatebenefratelli di Benevento after an intervention of bariatric surgery.
The man had undergone an “open conversion” surgery of a jejunal-ileal bypass that had been performed on him in 2008.
The operation appeared to have gone well, but on the afternoon of February 18, Giovannini was rushed back to the operating room due to internal bleeding. Despite the surgery, the 38-year-old died.
Giovannini's relatives, shocked and without exhaustive answers from the health workers, filed a complaint at the Carabinieri station in Giulianova (Teramo). The Public Prosecutor's Office Benevento he opened a case of manslaughter and ordered an autopsy on the body.
Three doctors from the Fatebenefratelli hospital are under investigation: two bariatric surgeons and a general surgeon. The investigation will have to ascertain the causes of Emanuele Giovannini's death and any responsibilities on the part of the health workers.
