Emanuele Giovannini, 38 years old from Tortoreto, in the province of Teramo, died on Sunday 18 February at the Fatebenefratelli hospital in Benevento after bariatric surgery.
The man had undergone an "open conversion" surgery of a jejunal-ileal bypass that had been performed on him in 2008.
The operation appeared to have gone well, but on the afternoon of February 18, Giovannini was rushed back to the operating room with internal bleeding. Despite the surgery, the 38-year-old died.
Giovannini's family, shocked and without a comprehensive response from the health workers, filed a complaint with the Carabinieri station in Giulianova (Teramo).

Three doctors at the Fatebenefratelli Hospital are under investigation: two bariatric surgeons and a general surgeon. The investigation will determine the cause of Emanuele Giovannini's death and any liability on the part of the medical staff.
The family of the 38-year-old, assisted by Studio3A, is asking for justice and clear answers about what happened. The tragedy of Emanuele Giovannini has brought the spotlight back on the risks of bariatric surgery and the need for greater attention and safety in this type of intervention.
It is important that the families of those who undergo this type of operation are adequately informed about the risks and possible complications. The competent authorities must clarify this matter and ascertain any responsibilities.
The death of Emanuele Giovannini cannot be in vain. It is necessary that everything possible be done to prevent similar tragedies from happening again in the future.
