Article Key Points
Nino Simeone, president of the Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Commission of the Municipality of Napoli, said that redevelopment work will be necessary within the plant to bring it up to standard.
Simeone stressed that the issue does not only concern Napoli, but involves all Italian teams and cities. The scheduling of the works will depend on the presentation of detailed projects and the amount of funds available for the restoration and modernization of the Maradona stadium. At the moment these are still proposals and official decisions are awaited.
The goal is to avoid Napoli having to play away from the Maradona during home games. Simeone explained that it is important to find a balance that satisfies all parties involved and that the meeting between sports councilor Manfredi and Napoli president De Laurentiis could have led to new developments on the stadium issue.
“I hope they can be done like in Bergamo and Udine, with the teams on the field with cranes and without changing venues for Napoli’s home games. At the moment, however, not a cent has been put in by the State, so we are waiting. Just as we are waiting to have official communication on the presence of the city of Naples for Euro 2032”, explained Simeone.
And then he added: “Manfredi and De Laurentiis met at the stadium for Napoli-Barcelona and I am sure that they will have updated each other on the stadium issue. It is not only a problem for the city of Naples and SSC Napoli, but something that also concerns other teams and other cities in Italy”.
Work will begin when detailed plans are submitted
"When will the work begin? Only when serious and detailed projects are presented, which will tell us how many millions of euros will be allocated for the maintenance and updating of the Maradona. At the moment we are still in the realm of ideas, so we are waiting for official provisions. I repeat: the idea is to then do the work, without forcing Napoli to play their home games away from the Maradona"he concluded.
