This morning, from 6am, a violent cloudburst hit the island ofIschia, dumping almost 40 millimeters of rain in an hour and causing widespread damage and disruption. Among the areas most affected is the capital city, where serious problems are being reported along via Michele Mazzella, one of the main roads. From the Pilastri and Campagnano areas, a river of mud and debris has invaded the road, creating significant difficulties for traffic.
In Ischia Porto, the historic Caffè Calise, located in Piazza degli Eroi, was flooded: the bar hall ended up under several centimeters of water, and the staff is busy removing it to restore normality. Several streets on the island were submerged by water, and in some places the road surface was damaged by the force of the incessant rain, which fell until 10 in the morning.
The most affected areas are Forio and Ischia Porto, while in Casamicciola, already severely tested by previous landslides, no serious critical issues have been reported, with the exception of some blown manholes. Local authorities are working to monitor the situation and intervene in the most critical points. The island of Ischia, already vulnerable to hydrogeological instability, is once again having to deal with extreme weather events, which call for the urgency of preventive measures to secure the territory.
