The Vesuvian territory is at the centre of exponential growth, both economically and touristically. The Ruins of Pompeii attract over 100,000 visitors every year 4,5 millions of visitors, while the Vesuvius National Park welcomes one million. The long-awaited opening of the Maximall Pompeii, the largest shopping park in Southern Italy, which will see a daily influx of approximately 44.000 Guests.

These numbers, combined with the increase in the tourist population and the upcoming celebration of theJubilee Year, make the presence of an adequate and functioning health facility indispensable. In the letter sent to De Luca, the mayors underline the need for Reopen the Emergency Department of Boscotrecase, already foreseen by the Regional Hospital Plan, and to strengthen the health and logistics infrastructures of the territory.

“The hospital, strategically located between Napoli e Salerno and at the entrance of the Sorrento Coast, is ideal to become a first level center for emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes and multiple traumas”, write the mayors. The increasing traffic congestion, especially with the opening of Maximall, risks compromising the timeliness of interventions. For this reason, the mayors propose the construction of a dedicated motorway link to the hospital and the restoration of theelisurface, essential for urgent relief efforts towards the Sorrentine peninsula, Amalfi Coast and Gulf Islands.

Despite recent competitions for the recruitment of health personnel, mayors warn that these efforts will be in vain without a concrete strengthening of emergency infrastructure. “Decisive interventions are needed to adapt health services to the increase in tourist flows and improve the safety of the entire area”, they reiterate. The final message from the mayors is clear: “The future of our territory depends on your action”. A call to responsibility, to guarantee citizens and tourists a health system that is up to the challenges that the Vesuvius area is preparing to face.
