On the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Regional Transplant Center Campania, which has its headquarters at theColli Hospital Company, the governor Vincenzo De Luca provided a significant picture of the state of donations and transplants in the region. The event, held in the crowded conference room of theMonaldi Hospital, was a moment of reflection on the progress made, the challenges still to be faced and the future of healthcare in Campania.
According to the data provided, they are 640 patients waiting for an organ for transplant in Campania. On the subject of donation, the governor highlighted that, to date, 1.753.019 citizens have expressed their will, and among these well 1.046.779 have chosen to say yes to organ donation. The province of Salerno stands out as the most virtuous, with a membership rate of 60,7%, a figure that represents a model for other provinces.
De Luca underlined the importance of the role of the Transplant Friend Desks, active at the Campania ASL, which record a 97,3% donation consent rate, superior to the87,2% of the national average. However, he acknowledged that there remains a cultural resistance to organ and tissue donation. “We need more incisive awareness-raising and counseling to overcome mistrust and respond to human suffering with greater impetus”, he has declared.
During the conference, De Luca expressed his heartfelt thanks to the retired primary doctors who have contributed with passion to the progress of the transplant sector in Campania, defining them as the custodians of the regional health excellence. He then urged the young doctors to keep their enthusiasm alive and to embody the spirit of their generation: “Bring something more, promote healthcare that is close to people, like the family doctor who enters homes and doesn't limit himself to prescribing prescriptions”, he added.
There was no shortage of observations on the social and political context. The governor underlined how traditional communities – political, trade union and religious – have weakened over time, leaving room for new forms of civil commitment: “You doctors represent a professional community that must remain alive in the social fabric, far from a policy that today increasingly resembles an equestrian circus”.
Finally, De Luca he recalled the weight of debts inherited from the past that weigh on the Campania healthcare system, with a cost of 470 million euros a year transferred to the central government. Despite this, he reiterated the importance of continuing to invest in the growth of the regional health system and to support those who, with dedication and competence, represent its beating heart.
