From the censorship of scientific research to the dismantling of public structures supporting citizens, to the withdrawal of the USA from the UN Council. Here are the first effects of the executive orders signed by Trump.
The US Administration has asked researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (the equivalent of the Italian National Health System) which deals with combating the spread of infectious diseases, disabilities and injuries in the workplace, to remove and stop any research or citation of the agency that refers to people LGBTQIA +.
According to the reputable medical news website MedPage, “CDC researchers were ordered to remove references to a series of prohibited terms including: gender, transgender, LGBT, transsexual, non-binary, designated male at birth, designated female at birth, biologically male, biologically female.”
The executive orders also specify that the purpose is to “restore biological truth to the federal government” and require all federal agencies to remove “internal and external statements, policies, regulations, forms, communications, or other messages that promote or inculcate gender ideology,” although it is still unclear what that ideology is.
Many studies to prevent or fight diseases and epidemics are based on data and statistics that also refer to sexual orientation, helping doctors to evaluate which contrast strategy to use and to decide, for example, who to vaccinate first to slow the spread of viruses. With these and other initiatives, research will be censored and doctors and scientists will be prohibited from using fundamental data.
Trump It also calls for a cut in funding for medical care and counseling for trans and intersex people under 19, which will have immediate negative effects, disrupting treatment in clinics funded entirely by federal funds.
Unfortunately, there are many initiatives against trans people and not only: among others the announced exclusion from military service and the closure of DEI programs, firing federal personnel who have worked on programs in favor of diversity, equity and inclusion and involving large companies such as Amazon and Meta in these unprecedented choices for a liberal democracy.
And following the USA, as in a story that seems to repeat itself in another guise, there are not only large companies, but also the governments of other states, perhaps with the aim of pleasing what not so long ago seemed to be among the most advanced democracies.
