Porta Capuana "Closed due to degradation": protest by citizens, voluntary traders
“Door closed due to degradation” – reads a sign posted in protest in recent days in front of the arch of Porta Capuana. The words written with a marker represent the cry of alarm launched by residents, shopkeepers and volunteers who every day distribute free meals in the square in front of the Aragonese Towers.
"Councillor Borrelli, here we feel alone and completely abandoned by the institutions. Is it really so absurd to obtain more decorum, cleaner streets, more police controls to remove drug dealers and criminals from the streets, regulate the flow of illegal immigrants and offer the homeless more dignified solutions?" - writes a citizen to the Regional Councilor of Europa Verde Francesco Emilio Borrelli.

“Where there is the oldest gate in the city, there is an area that has become an open-air landfill and a public urinal, there are immigrants and people who live outside the rules and laws. It should be a place of historical interest that should attract tourists and instead it drives them away. In these conditions who would be motivated to visit it? So in addition to decorum, here we are also talking about economy because tourism can generate money and yet we allow our heritage to be reduced like this.
In recent months, despite our battles for the territory, the situation has worsened dramatically. Now we need decisive action” – says Attorney Fabrizio De Maio, spokesperson for the residents who are fighting for their land and for the Facebook group “Illuminiamo la storia”.

"The conditions of Porta Capuana are the mirror of the disaster in which the city finds itself, which is literally sinking into the most absolute degradation. We have denounced, we have requested interventions, for a long time but too little has been done to try to resolve a deep-rooted problem. The next city administration will have to take this into account and offer citizens a quality of life superior to the current one." - this is what Councilor Borrelli said.
