Avellino.
“I ask forgiveness for what I did against Aldo Gioia, but I want to clarify that I only inflicted three stab wounds.” Giovanni Limata, the young man sentenced to 24 years in prison for the murder of Aldo Gioia, wrote a letter to the Attorney General asking for forgiveness for his crime and urging the hearing in court of a key witness who was not heard in the first degree trial. The letter, delivered during yesterday's hearing at the Court of Appeal of Napoli, represents an attempt by Limata to clarify the facts and obtain a review of his sentence.
The murder of Aldo Gioia, which occurred in April 2021, shocked the Avellino community. Limata, 23 years old at the time, was the boyfriend of the victim's daughter, Elena Joy, with whom he had planned the murder and then ran away together.
According to the reconstruction, Limata entered Gioia's apartment, in the centre of Avellino, and stabbed him 13 times. The plan also included the murder of Elena's wife and sister, but the victim's screams woke them up and forced them to flee.
Elena Gioia, initially tried to stage a robbery, but her version was denied by the investigations. She and Limata were arrested a few hours after the crime and confessed to the murder.
During the first-degree trial, messages exchanged between the two fiancés emerged in which the murder plan was outlined.
Yesterday, in the Court of Appeal, all the lawyers of the parties in the case submitted their conclusions. The civil parties, represented by the lawyer Francesca Sartori and the lawyer Brigida Cesta, reiterated their request for conviction for both defendants.
Elena Gioia's defense, supported by lawyer Livia Rossi, instead asked for a review of the sentence in consideration of her collaboration with justice and her repentance.
Lawyer Rolando Iorio, defender of Giovanni Limata, in addition to asking for the hearing of the key witness, insisted on the request for a review of the sentence, underlining his client's repentance and his willingness to take responsibility for his actions.
The judges of the Court of Appeal, presided over by Dr. Ginevra Abbamondi, have reserved their decision on Limata's request and will release their decision at the next hearing, scheduled for Monday, April 15.
