The image of Pep Guardiola with scratches on his face after Manchester City's draw against Feyenoord has raised not only a sporting debate, but also a psychological one. Pietro Bussolotti, councilor of the National Council of the Order of Psychologists (CNOP), expressed concern to LaPresse regarding the possible impact of this gesture: "The scene is impressive and is going around the world. A structured adult can evaluate it with detachment, but there is a risk of emulation, especially among the youngest. If someone like him does it, why can't others do it?".
Bussolotti called the image “disturbing,” stressing that “Guardiola, a leader who should know how to manage emotions, did not send a positive message to the team.” However, he also acknowledged that the gesture could be interpreted as a manifestation of humanity, highlighting the pressure experienced by the coach in a difficult moment for the club. After the draw in Champions League, Manchester City are coming off a comeback and a home defeat against Tottenham in the Premier League.
“Guardiola has shown his vulnerability, which makes him human, but this should not justify certain behaviors, especially because they influence those who look at him as a role model”, concluded Bussolotti, opening the reflection on the importance of emotional management in high-level sport.
