The program agreement for the transformation of the western part of the city of Naples has been signed, concerning the entire area of the Naples FS station Phlegraean Fields.
The objectives include the strengthening of the infrastructure, the development of the intermodal hub, the urban regeneration of the railway areas owned by the FS Italiane Group and the creation of new university spaces.
The agreement, signed by the Campania Region, the Municipality of Naples, the State Property Agency, the Parthenope University of Naples, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, and FS Sistemi Urbani, provides for the construction of a new station and depot for Line 6 of the municipal metro, the regeneration of the railway areas, and the construction of a new Parthenope University campus.
The agreement, it is emphasized, represents a fundamental step for the development and urban regeneration of an entire city area, which is shaping up to be a new western gateway for Naples. The project aims to restore regenerated spaces to the community, promote sustainability, and encourage intermodality, with expected benefits for the entire metropolitan area.
As part of the city's infrastructure development, the Municipality of Naples will build a new depot/workshop and a new metro station for Line 6. The new depot/workshop will be located on land owned by FS Sistemi Urbani and RFI, in addition to state-owned land that the State Property Agency transferred to the Municipality of Naples in 2024, through federalized land ownership procedures.
The project also includes the creation of a modal interchange system between the L2 and L6 metro lines, with the aim of improving public transport connectivity and facilitating transfers between different modes of transport.
The improved connections will also be achieved by extending the pedestrian walkway at the Leopardi station and creating a new station front on Via Tiberio. Furthermore, the agreement aims to regenerate the areas of Via Diocleziano and Via Giulio Cesare, owned by FS Sistemi Urbani, through the establishment of new public and private functions.
The goal is to improve the overall urban quality of the Fuorigrotta-Bagnoli route by strengthening the connection between Piazzale Tecchio and Via Campegna, including through the FS Park interchange. This completes the redevelopment of the western area envisioned in the Bagnoli-Coroglio plan through an integrated urban planning strategy that combines urban and environmental regeneration by improving public transportation accessibility.
Finally, the agreement provides for the construction of the new campus of the University of Naples Parthenope, which will be located in the former arsenal on Via Campegna, a state-owned building leased to the university. This will provide modern spaces for training, research, and academic development, and will also house student residences to further strengthen the university's role in the city.
