Yesterday morning it began at the Court of Napoli, the first hearing of the trial against 20 people accused of usury and racketeering, crimes aggravated by the Camorra mafia association. The defendants are believed to be members of the Vigilia clan, active between Soccavo and Fuorigrotta, and for years at the head of the drug dealing squares of Rione Traiano.
According to the Prosecutor's Office, the Vigilia clan allegedly blackmailed a merchant on Via Epomeo, demanding 15 thousand euros in several installments. Two other citizens allegedly fell victim to usury, forced to pay exorbitant interest on loans received.
A fact that causes great concern is the absence in the courtroom of the alleged victims, who - as reported by Il Mattino - have renounced to appear to claim their status as injured parties. This silence fuels the climate of silence and fear that reigns in western Naples.
The Municipality of Naples, the Presidency of the Council, represented by their respective lawyers, and the association Sos Impresa, defended by the lawyer Alessandro Motta, joined the trial as civil parties.
The trial will continue in early June, when sentencing requests are expected for the defendants who chose the abbreviated trial.
