A combined approach of treatments to “kill” a tumor mass that cannot be surgically removed.
The delicate operation was performed on a 76 year old man Avellino with an inoperable liver tumor by Paolo Sorrentino, director of the General Medicine Hepatology Unit of the San Giuseppe Hospital Trust Moscati, and his team, in collaboration with the interventional radiologists coordinated by Giulio Lombardi.
In the hybrid angiographic room of the City Hospital, the flow of the liver artery was stopped. Then, through microwave ablation and subsequent chemoembolization of the large lesion (about 10 centimeters), necrosis of the tumor.
“The combined interventional approach with arterial flow blockade using a balloon microcatheter, microwave ablation and chemoembolization – explains Sorrentino – allowed us to intervene more safely and effectively on an inoperable mass with a satisfactory result.
The technique used reduces the risk of recurrence and spread, increases the possibility of obtaining complete tumor necrosis and increases average survival. This approach, performed for the first time in Avellino and a few times in Campania, therefore offers the patient greater control of the disease and an improvement in the prognosis".
The 76-year-old is in good condition and after the operation at the City Hospital he was transferred to the Hepatology Medicine department in the Agostino Landolfi company hospital in Solofra.
After a short period of hospitalization, the patient will continue his treatment path, already planned by the Gom (Multidisciplinary Oncology Group) of the Hepatocarcinoma of the Company Moscati in which he was inserted by the oncologist Cesare Gridelli, director of the Department of Onco-Hematology, with the possibility of access to the most innovative immunotherapy treatments.
