The senator Gianluca Cantalamessa asks the Ministry of the Interior to find out what initiatives will be taken to keep the memory of Angelo Vassallo alive and raise awareness among new generations.
14 years after the murder of Angelo Vassallo, mayor of Acciaroli assassinated on September 5, 2010, Senator Gianluca Catalamessa (Lega) has presented a parliamentary question to the Ministry of the Interior to denounce episodes that seem to want to erase the memory of Mayor Pescatore.
Despite the ongoing investigations, conducted by the Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office of Salerno, and the recent turn of events that has aggravated the charges against nine suspects, including carabinieri and entrepreneurs, the murder of Vassallo still remains unpunished.
Senator Catalamessa underlines how, in recent times, several episodes have raised fears of an attempt to oblivion towards the figure of Vassallo, who dedicated his life to the defense of legality and the fight against organized crime.
Among the reported facts are the expulsion of the Angelo Vassallo Sindaco Pescatore Foundation from the management of the Castello di Capano, symbol of Pollica, now entrusted to a private company; the destruction of the area of the “Giglio marino”, dedicated to Vassallo, located on the beach of Acciaroli; and the removal of the work “La Grande Onda”, created in 2019 with over 2.500 plastic bottles, symbol of justice and freedom and dedicated to the former mayor.
In the question, Senator Catalamessa asks the competent Ministers to clarify what initiatives they intend to undertake to keep the memory of Angelo Vassallo alive, and to raise awareness among citizens, especially the new generations, on the importance of combating drug trafficking and the spread of organized crime.
“After some episodes that seem to want to erase the memory of the former mayor of Acciaroli, Angelo Vassallo, barbarically killed in 2010 and to this day without justice, I wanted to present a question to the Ministry of the Interior” declared Senator Catalamessa.
“I asked what initiatives you intend to promote to keep the memory of Angelo Vassallo alive, and to raise awareness in particular among the new generations on the importance of fighting drug trafficking and the spread of organized crime.”
Dario Vassallo, President of the Angelo Vassallo Mayor Fisherman Foundation and brother of Angelo, also commented on Senator Catalamessa's initiative, underlining the urgency of preserving his brother's memory: “Angelo sacrificed his life to defend our territory and legality, and we cannot allow his memory to be erased.
It is essential that the institutions not only keep its history alive, but also pass it on to new generations, so that they understand the importance of fighting against organised crime and its trafficking.
The President of the Foundation Angelo Vassallo reiterates once again its full confidence in the work carried out by the Anti-Mafia Prosecutor of Salerno, Dr. Giuseppe Borrelli. Furthermore, we strongly support the questioning of Senator Catalamessa and we expect the competent authorities to act in a concrete manner”.
The Angelo Vassallo Sindaco Pescatore Foundation will continue to carefully follow the institutional initiatives and work to preserve the memory of the fisherman mayor, so that his commitment to the defense of justice and legality is not forgotten.
