Tragedy narrowly avoided in the ancient heart of Torre del Greco: the roof of a palazzo, families on the street.
A wing of a majestic historic building, which towered over Piazza Fontana a few steps from the famous Cento Fontane, crumbled under the fury of a violent storm.
The rubble swallowed up several cars, leaving a landscape of devastation in the heart of the city.
At least eight families, who called that building home, were forced to evacuate in panic. The nightmare of losing everything has deeply affected the faces of men, women and children, now taking refuge with relatives or shelters.
The Fire Brigade, municipal technicians and the police intervened promptly at the site of the disaster to put the security the area and provide assistance to the people involved. The recovery operations of the rubble are still ongoing, while the investigators are trying to reconstruct the exact causes of the crollo.
The local community is shocked by this new tragedy, which reopens old wounds and raises questions about the safety of the building heritage.
“Another piece of our history is shattered,” comments a resident with tears in his eyes. “We need answers and concrete actions to prevent similar disasters from happening again.”
