Luigi Mangione, 26, was formally charged yesterday in New York with the second-degree murder of Brian Thomston, the CEO of United Healthcare, CNN reported.
In addition to the serious charge of murder, Mangione faces four other charges: three counts of illegal possession of firearms and one count of possession of false documents, according to court documents available online.
Details about the charges
The weapons possession concerns a homemade pistol, made with a 3D printer and equipped with a silencer, found inside a backpack in his possession. During the hearing, it emerged that his profile on the X platform has been suspended.
Mangione, who is currently being held without bail, has disputed allegations that he had access to large sums of money — about $8.000 in cash and other foreign currency — and used a device to encrypt his electronic communications, presumably to evade investigations. The judge said the device may have been used to avoid being traced.
Asked if he had maintained contact with his family, Mangione replied: “Until recently.”
Who is Luigi Nicholas Mangione
Originally from Baltimore, Mangione is described as a young man from a wealthy Italian-American family. However, the seriousness of the charges has attracted media attention and raised multiple questions about his past and the motive for the murder.
