There were 475 in 2024 pedestrians killed sulle strade italiane, 313 uomini (283 nel 2023) e 162 donne (157 un anno fa): 253 avevano più di 65 anni, il 53% del totale, 15 erano minorenni. La stima preliminare è stata resa nota dall’asaps, the Association of Supporters and Friends of the Highway Police.
In 2023, Istat had counted 485 deaths, with a consolidated figure: "It is certain that failing asaps to intercept all deaths that occur in hospital in the thirty days following the accident, in 2024 the tragic data of the previous year will be exceeded", anticipates the president Giordano Biserni.
The most tragic region was Lombardy, with 79 deaths (51 the previous year), followed by Lazio with 59 (71 in 2023) and Campania with 53 (44 in 2023), then Emilia-Romagna, 41, and Tuscany, 38. December turned into a carnage with 63 deaths, two per day: to find a worse figure you have to go back to January 2019, with 67 victims.
There are still too many cases of road piracy, over 50, and many road users have been hit after a vehicle breakdown, especially on motorways and extra-urban roads, with pedestrians hit and killed by other vehicles in transit after getting off their vehicle.
“These are unacceptable data for a civilized country and a snapshot of road insecurity for the most vulnerable user,” comments Biserni, according to whom “some rules introduced by the latest reform of the highway code can lead to an improvement in safety conditions, such as the immediate withdrawal of the license for distraction from a cell phone, but more needs to be done to protect vulnerable users such as pedestrians, with more dedicated patrols and certain sanctions. Throughout Europe, pedestrians are better protected.”
Asaps also announces an awareness campaign "so that pedestrians make themselves more visible with a reflective vest that could save their lives".
