A turning point in the waste issue on the Italy-Tunisia axis, regarding the 120 tons of waste (produced by 16 municipalities in the Cilento area of the province of Salerno) destined for the North African state.

The criminal section of the Court of Appeal of Tunis has acquitted the two former ministers of the Environment, Mustapha Aroui and Chokri Belhassan, of being involved in the illegal import of waste from Italy. The court has instead convicted other key figures involved in the case, including the owner of the importing company. The news agency Nova reports.

The story dates back to 2019, with the signing of a contract for the disposal of a large quantity of waste between a company Polla and similar Tunisian companies. The bill of lading spoke of “non-hazardous” waste.

However, the inspection by the Sousse Customs revealed that the containers contained waste of all kinds, coming without any preventive treatment from the separate waste collection produced by sixteen municipalities in Cilento.
