A man took his own life last night in the Viterbo prison. It is the seventh suicide in 2024 in the prisons of Lazio, where according to the findings of the National Guarantor there is also a case to be ascertained, in Frosinone, where last Thursday another man died following a sudden illness.
“The waste of lives and rights continues in prisons “Italians,” says Stefano Anastasia, guarantor of people subjected to restrictive measures on personal freedom in the Lazio Region.
We, the Guarantors, the health workers, the penitentiary workers and the volunteers – continues Anastasia – do what we can, but the scarcity of spaces, personnel and financial resources, together with the stiffening of legislation, jurisprudence and administration are making prisons unlivable and out of control places.
In mourning yet another death, we appeal to the Government and Parliament for a change of direction that first of all reduces overcrowding and allows for dignified living and working conditions in prison".

It is really sad that there are so many suicides in prisons, especially in Lazio. The problems are so big and I don't see a change in the future, I hope the Government takes this situation seriously.
I also think it is important to do something to improve the conditions in prisons. It is not right that people have to suffer like this, we need real change.
The situation is really worrying and there seems to be no effective solution. Resources are limited and life in prison must be dignified, we hope for a quick response.
