This morning, in the presence of the Mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, the Fontana degli Incanti, located in Piazza Salvatore di Giacomo, was reactivated. PosillipoThe restoration project also included the recovery and relocation of the ornamental lions, whose existence had been forgotten for years.
The decorative elements, lost for over forty years, were found in the basement of the Maschio Angioino thanks to the collaboration between the Street Furniture and Sustainable Mobility Service, the Art and Cultural Heritage Service and the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape.
The restoration involved careful bibliographical and archival research, during which inspections were conducted in the municipal warehouses. Thanks to the documentation found, it was possible to attribute the large fragments found in Castel Nuovo to the ancient lions of the fountain. The statues were restored in the laboratory and then repositioned in their original location. At the same time, ABC took care of restoring the fountain's hydraulic system.
“For months we have been working on the restoration of the city fountains, which are not only decorative and functional elements, but also testimonies of our urban history,” said Mayor Manfredi. “In the case of the Fontana degli Incanti, we have managed to restore the appearance it had half a century ago, now visible only in old photographs.”
The fountain owes its name to the legend according to which, in ancient times, the water of its basin was used to create love spells. Today, it returns to enchant citizens and visitors with its newfound beauty.
