According to the museum management, the closure was ordered by the Campania Region, owner of the structure, following an inspection that revealed the presence of water infiltrations, falling debris and lack of toilet facilities.

This situation has led to the loss of usability of the museum, which is no longer able to accommodate visitors. The closure has also caused the cancellation of numerous reservations, from Italy and abroad.

The museum is dedicated to the history of the landing of the Allied forces in Italy, which took place on 9 September 1943. Operation Avalanche, as it was called, was the most important amphibious operation before the Normandy landings.

The facility houses a large collection of artifacts, including uniforms, helmets, bombs, and a Willys Jeep from the U.S. military. Outside, you can admire a U.S. Army Sherman tank and a pontoon bridge, used to cross rivers with men and vehicles.

The museum’s closure was met with disappointment by citizens, associations and institutions. Opposition city councilor Elisabetta Barone called what was happening “shameful,” while Federalberghi Salerno president Antonio Ilardi proposed moving the museum to Caserma Angelucci, a military building located in the city center.

The Campania Region has announced that it is working to resolve the museum’s structural problems and that the facility will reopen to the public “as soon as possible.”
