The Origin of 'Stop Bajon'

'Stop Bajon' was a milestone in Neapolitan rap, created in 1984 thanks to the collaboration between Tullio De Piscopo and the famous Pino Daniele. Originally recorded in Formia at Pino Daniele's Bagaria studios, the song is the result of a unique mix of talents: the great jazz player Don Cherry on pocket trumpet and dussun'guni African guitar, Famadou Don Moye of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Rino Zurzolo on bass, Joe Amoruso on keyboards, Pino Daniele on guitar and Tullio De Piscopo on drums and percussion.

A revolutionary rhythm

The title 'Stop Bajon' originates from the Latin American dance taught to De Piscopo by his father Giuseppe, also a drummer. However, the rhythm was reinterpreted with an innovative sound, starting from the timpani and tom toms to create a solid base and then adding the word 'stop', symbol of the evolution of the bajon into a new sound that reflected the energy of a Naples in full ferment.

An international success

Since its release, 'Stop Bajon' has gained worldwide recognition. It hit number one in the UK and across Europe. Ron Hardy, one of the pioneers of House Music, regularly played the track on his booth in San Francisco in the 80s. Since then, DJs such as Ashley Beedle, Parcels Band, Thomas Bangalter, Bob Sinclair, Gaspard Augé and Michael Gray have all released their own remixes of the iconic track.

A special edition

The recent decision to publish and distribute the Picture Disc of this remix comes from the success of the few vinyl copies released for Record Store Day, which sold out in no time. This celebratory project not only pays homage to 40 years of 'Stop Bajon', but also reaffirms the importance of Tullio De Piscopo and his avant-garde musical vision in the international music scene. Ultimately, the new remix continues to consolidate the legacy of 'Stop Bajon' as a timeless song, capable of influencing generations of listeners and artists around the world.
