The magistrate died last night in Reggio Calabria, at the age of 88. Augustine Cordova, former head of the Palmi and Napoli.
Having entered the judiciary in 1963, he was a magistrate in Reggio Calabria, first in criminal law and then in civil law, until 1970, when he moved to the Tribunal, where he was a member of the panel for five years.
Then he moved to the Office of Investigation, where he remained until 1980. During that period, he conducted important trials against the 'ndrangheta clans, including the one against the so-called "60" group led by Paolo De Stefano, killed in an ambush in Reggio Calabria in October 1985. The trial ended with the conviction of a good part of the defendants.
. From 1980 to 1987 Cordova presided over the criminal section of the Court of Reggio Calabria. In December 1987 he was appointed head of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Palmi.
At that time, his investigation into alleged connections between the mafia, politics and freemasonry caused a stir, leading to the seizure of all the lists of freemasons in the Goi.
Also during his Calabrian period, another investigation of his into alleged irregularities in the tenders for the construction of the Enel thermoelectric power plant in Gioia Tauro led, in July 1990, to the seizure of the construction site.
When his mandate in Palmi expired, he ran for the National Anti-Mafia Directorate but without success and subsequently, in July 1993, he was appointed chief prosecutor in Naples
